The materialism of this world seduces many to modify themselves, (at an extreme) in order to fulfill the desires of others, in some form or another. Some do it for survival and some do it because of not feeling beautiful. Some do it for both. It is in our nature to modify ourselves for basic necessities (clothing, medical treatments, and shelter). The modification (extremely changing the way we look), in this day and age, that concerns me, stems from race and ideas of chauvinism. People change their complexions through bleaching, modify their hair, and also want to fit into mysoginistic images by becoming oversexualized symbols for media entertainment. Not all modification is bad and probably wouldn't be as damaging if moderation was the main principle. I would say, however, that certain modification do deflect us from our roots (the roots of all humanity); and that may not help us in our rightful connection to who and what we truly are (inside and out).
